ProPrint - February 2011:

10 Thousand Trees

Prografica Communications

The programme was established by Australian marketer Ian Krawitz as a spinoff from his 10 Thousand Feet firm, a market research outfit known for probono work in canvassing consumers’ attitudes to sustainability.

10 Thousand Trees is an FSC-certified legacy model. A print business asks clients to help the environment by reserving an agreed margin on the job as a paper offset. This is donated to 10 Thousand Trees. The base level is a 2% margin, which gives the printer silver status (a 60% offset). But there are other levels (green for below 60%, gold for 80% and platinum green for 100%). The organisation then pays the proceeds to Australian forest management groups to plant trees. The subsidies assist plantations to build a sustainable supply of timber, and minimise the paper industry’s long-term call on old-growth forests. Blue gums from premium seed are grown to maturity at various fire-insured plantation leases in areas selected for good rainfall. They are managed under FSC, PEFC and ISO 14001 certification, then harvested to make environmentally friendly paper, with the profits re-invested into more trees. 10 Thousand Trees claims it effectively doubles the number of trees every 10 years - 10 trees today will make 10,000 trees in 120 years, when the grandchildren of today’s Australians reap the benefits.

Prografica managing director Kerim El Gabailli says his multimedia company, which offers offset and digital printing, campaign management and graphic design, has followed environmentally sound principles for years, so the programme was a good fit. “One of the really valuable aspects for us is that we were not the only ones who could say we were doing something for the environment by displaying the logo on our website, but our customers can also do it.”
